A HARTLEPOOL teen followed in the footsteps of the world’s greats when he swam his way to two gold medals in a national competition at the Olympic Park.

Joshua Scott won the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke events in the Independent Schools Association Swimming Final.

Joshua, 13, trains with Aquaforce Swimming Academy, which is based at Mill House Leisure Centre in Raby Road, Hartlepool.

Alison Middleton, head coach at the Academy, said: “Josh has been training very hard alongside his friends.

“He trains for 10 hours a week along with his football training as well.”

Joshua won gold in the London Aquatic Centre, in the same pool used for the Olympic swimming events in 2012.

International stars like the most successful Olympian of all time, 18-time gold medallist Michael Phelps and other swimming sensations such as Ryan Lochte and Chad Le Clos, all won gold in the same pool as Joshua.

British swimmer Michael Jamieson set a national record on his way to silver in the 200m breaststroke while Rebecca Adlington also made the podium at the centre.

Joshua’s success has now seen him qualify for the Northumberland and Durham 2015 Championships, which will take place this weekend at the Sunderland Aquatic Centre.

Joshua, who attends Red House School in Stockton, will compete in the 50m and 100m backstroke events, after recording times of 34.30 and 1:12:30 respectively.

Alison said: “The Aquaforce boys have gained 45 Northumberland and Durham qualifying times this year, with nine boys representing us in the final, it’s a fantastic achievement.

“They are a great group of boys and I’m very proud as Aquaforce has only been running for three years.

“We started with 33 kids and now have 440, it’s a credit to our workforce of voluntary helpers.”
