There’s still time to take sea dip

FUNDRAISERS planning on making a splash for charity in this year’s Boxing Day Dip have been given more time to register.

Dippers now have until Thursday, December 22, to sign up for the event at Seaton Carew after the deadline was extended by one week.

Organisers, the Hartlepool Lions club, has also announced a change of venue from Seaton Carew Social Club in Station Lane, which suffered a fire earlier in the year and is undergoing refurbishment.

Instead, everyone will now change and meet at the Staincliffe Hotel, off Coronation Drive.

So far, 400 people have registered to take part including dippers from as far away as Australia, South Africa, Cheshire and Gloucestershire.

This will be the 40th and final year the dip is organised by the Hartlepool Lions due to falling numbers.

Lions spokesman Mike Dowson said: “We held our first dip from the Staincliffe Hotel and we are going out from the same venue.

“It’s rather poignant that it should end this way.

“We are hoping that dippers will support us this year in order to go out on a high after 40 years, which is something of a milestone for the club.

“We are grateful to the Staincliffe for stepping in at this very late hour.”

Hartlepool Round Table will take over the running of the dip and members will shadow Lions this year.

The parade will move off at 11.30am from the Staincliffe, along the promenade to the beacon steps, where dippers will gain access to the beach.

Pipers are also set to add to the spirit by joining in the parade.

Anyone wishing to do the dip must download a registration card from www.hartlepoollions.wetpaint.com then arrange to collect their sponsorship forms from Norman Hope, at 9 Whitfield Drive, Hartlepool, or on (01429) 704266.
