THREE teachers will take part in a gruelling 140-mile charity ride this weekend to raise funds to send students on the trip of a lifetime.
Jason Lennox, Neil Swinburn and Andrew Raine, who are all teaching staff at Wellfield Community School, in Wingate, will set off on a Coast to Coast bike ride tomorrow.
The aim is to raise money to pay for 12 students and three staff from the school to go to South Africa next February, where they will help build a new school and teach English and football to pupils at the Mpondweni Schietsdrift School.
The trio will start the ride in Whitehaven tomorrow morning before making their way to Roker, in Sunderland, on Sunday.
It will cost £2,500 for each pupil to go on the two-week trip and fundraising activities have already begun.
Other fundraising events planned include a race night, car wash and a funday at the school, in North Road East, on Saturday, July 6.
The school has been sponsoring Mpondweni Schietsdrift School for several years.
Sarah Armstrong, the school’s senior pupil achievement leader, said: “This will be a great opportunity for the students and staff to be able to help the pupils at Mpondweni Schietsdrift School.
“To help them on their way, the three teachers are taking part in this extremely difficult bike ride, over various terrains and in just two days.
“All of the school wishes them the best of luck and it would be great to get as much sponsorship money for them as possible.”
Members of the community are being encouraged to sponsor the trio’s challenge. To do so, call the school on (01429) 838413.
