Thief had been drinking

A MAN had been drinking when he went into a shop and stole some turkey.

Lee Francis Stockton had been boozing at a family party when he went into the Tesco Express store, at the Fens Shops in Catcote Road, Hartlepool, and stole the meat.

The 31-year-old was captured on CCTV cameras and although he could not remember the crime, he admitted it was him in the footage.

Prosecuting, Alan Davison told Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court: “It was in the afternoon when Stockton went into the Tesco Express store and took a quantity of turkey without paying.

“He was shown the CCTV footage and was honest enough saying he knows it was him, but can’t remember stealing the goods.”

Stockton, of Wynyard Road, Hartlepool, pleaded guilty to the theft on January 28.

Mitigating, Barry Gray said: “He tells me he doesn’t remember all of this although he admitted it straight away.

“He had been round to his sister’s house and through the generosity of his family he enjoyed food and wine and became drunk.

“He doesn’t know why, but he committed this offence and he was caught on CCTV. He is sorry for his actions.”

Chairman of the magistrates’ bench Robert Darling ordered Stockton to pay £20 costs and sentenced him to a 12-month conditional discharge.
