MORE than 9,000 homes were left without power earlier today following a fault at a main substation.

Thousands of residents in Peterlee, Horden and Blackhall were left without electricity for more than two hours from 11.24am until power was restored at 1.45pm.

A Northern Powergrid spokeswoman said: “The fault affected 9,403 customers in Peterlee, Blackhall and Horden.

“There was a fault in one of our substations.

“We managed to switch the network around and restore power by 1.45pm.
“We apologise for any inconvenience and don’t anticipate there being any further problems.”

Engineers were this afternoon carrying out an investigation into the cause of the fault

The power cut is expected to have been the cause of a lift breaking down at Castle Dene Shopping Centre, in Peterlee, around 11.30am.

A crew from Peterlee Fire Station attended and opened the doors to release the person inside.
