MEMBERS of a town martial arts club made the right moves as they achieved high-level grades.

Five members of Hartlepool Jujitsu Club made the trip to Derbyshire last month and came back to Hartlepool delighted with the outcome.

Club coach Dominic O’Donovan, 42, led the way as he impressively earned his 4th dan, as did club members Brian Ray, 51, Steven Wells, 45, and Zul Altaf, 37.

And to cap off an impressive day for the club, which is based at Owton Manor Primary School, in the town, Bronia Butterfield, 36, achieved her 2nd Dan.

The hardworking members of the group who achieved their 4th Dan spent four years working towards it after completing their 3rd Dan.

Dominic, a dad-of-two who lives in Barton Avenue, in Hartlepool, said: “We worked hard for four years and in the last few months we really stepped up the training.

“To achieve the 4th Dan it takes commitment and dedication and we have been working hard to maintain high standards.”

Those who practice jujitsu work for three months between every belt they achieve when they start out.

It then takes around a year to work from a brown belt to black belt before a two year block of working towards a 2nd Dan.

It then takes three years to work towards the 3rd Dan, four years ahead of achieving a 4th Dan and so on.

Dominic added: “It was a proud moment to achieve the 4th Dan and to see everyone else doing so well as well.

“You can’t take a Dan grade local, it has to be taken in front of a senior Dan grade in Derbyshire, but the trip was definitely worthwhile.”

Hartlepool Jujitsu Club meets at Owton Manor Primary School, in Eskdale Road, on a Friday from 7pm-8pm for juniors and from 8pm-9pm for seniors and on a Sunday from 6pm-7pm for juniors and 7pm-8pm for seniors.

Anyone interested in joining the club or for more information can call Dominic on 07951 245852.
