The body of Christine Henderson, 50, was found in a property in Cherwell Terrace, in the Teesside town’s Brambles Farm estate, during the early hours of Monday.
Earlier today, a 47-year-old man was charged with murder and was due to appear before magistrates on Teesside.
The victim was formally identified yesterday as the inquiry by murder squad detectives continues to investigate how she died.
Christine is said to have three children and had been living in Kent Avenue, in the Belle Vue area of Hartlepool.
Neighbours believe she was visiting friends in Middlesbrough when she died.
They added that their Hartlepool terraced street “is in shock” as people come to terms with losing a woman described as “shy and retiring”.
Shortly after Christine’s body was discovered, police issued an urgent appeal for help to trace her 47-year-old partner Graham Barry Gibson and he was later arrested on suspicion of murder.
Police have also been in and out of Christine’s home over the last couple of days as part of the probe that has seen forensic tests carried out.
A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “A post-mortem examination was carried out which concluded that Christine had died of stab wounds.”
Detectives had launched a murder inquiry after her body was found at 1am on Monday.
They cordoned off several streets around the brick-built terraced house and put up a white forensics tent in the front yard.
One neighbour, a woman who did not want to be named, said she thought Christine was living with a man at the address and that she was originally from Newcastle.
She added: “This is a close community, most of the people around here know each other. But they kept themselves to themselves.
“She must have been living here for around a year, but she only spoke in passing. She seemed nice enough, quite shy and retiring.
“You didn’t see her around much.
“The street is in shock.”
Another woman, who also did not want to be named, believes Christine was visiting friends in Middlesbrough when she died.
She said: “She has been here for about a year. She kept herself to herself, but always said hello.
“It’s tragic what’s happened.”
Anyone with information about Christine’s death is asked to call Cleveland Police on (01642) 303285 or 303288.
