DISCOUNT store staff and customers have pulled together to raise thousands of pounds for a cancer charity.

The Poundland store, in Middleton Grange Shopping Centre, Hartlepool, has held a variety of quirky fundraisers and collections over the last two years to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The efforts of the colleagues and customers in the store has helped to raise £3,437.39p for the cause.

Lisa Wrigley, assistant store manager in Hartlepool, said: “I think it’s great that Poundland is supporting Macmillan and giving something back to the community, it’s a cause that affects a lot of people.

“All the staff here have really enjoyed our fundraising activities including dress down days and I think it’s been really good for enhancing team spirit.

“I’d really like to thank all of our customers and the public for their generosity, we couldn’t have raised such a great total without them.”

The support of the Hartlepool store helped the company to raise £345,000 for the cause nationwide.

Sharon Cottam, fundraising manager for Macmillan Cancer Support, said: “We are overwhelmed by the support from Poundland staff and customers in Hartlepool.

“I’d like to thank staff members and customers for raising so much, every pound will help Macmillan improve the lives of people affected by cancer.”
