COMMUTERS were faced with delays this morning after one of Hartlepool’s main roads was closed.

The A689 was closed in both directions just after 8am after a lorry with a trailer apparently trying to do a U-turn ended up in a ditch.

JACK-KNIFED: The incident which closed the A689 on the outskirts of Hartlepool this morning.

The vehicle belonged to Symphony, one of the UK’s largest suppliers of fitted kitchen, fitted bedroom and fitted bathroom furniture.

A bus which tried to avoid the jack-knifed lorry also got stuck in the soft grass of the central reservation.

The dual carriageway was closed westbound prior to Greatham Lights and eastbound at Dalton Back Lane while the lorry awaited recovery.

The road was fully re-opened at about 9.30am.
