Drivers hurt in crash hospital

A WOMAN had to be cut free from her vehicle by firefighters after a collision between a car and a van on a busy dual carriageway.

Police, the fire brigade and paramedics were called to the A689 between Wynyard and Sedgefield yesterday after the collision between a van and black Nissan Qashqai.

Firefighters used cutting equipment to remove the roof of the car and the woman was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital of North Tees, in Stockton, with internal injuries.

The van driver managed to get out of the vehicle, which had turned over on to its side, and he was also taken to hospital as a precaution.

Both lanes in the westbound carriageway were closed for around 45 minutes while emergency services dealt with the incident at 5pm.

Fire crews from Billingham, Stockton, Newton Aycliffe and Sedgefield were all called to the scene.
