CLOSURES ... the northbound Tyne Tunnel will be closed for two weekends for repairs.

DRIVERS using the Tyne Tunnel could face delays for the next two weekends while repair work is carried out.

The northbound tunnel will be closed from 8pm on Friday to 6am on Monday both this weekend and next for repairs to tunnel equipment damaged by a large goods vehicle.

A contra-flow system will be in operation, with users travelling in both directions through the new southbound tunnel.

Tunnel operations manager Stuart Sutton said: “In order to minimise disruption to customers and maximise the efficiency of repairs by specialist contractors, we have scheduled repair work over the course of two weekends.

“The new tunnel will operate in contra-flow mode, to allow vehicles to travel in both directions.

“The work will take place at times when traffic flows are approximately 50 per cent of those experienced on weekdays.

“During these closures it will be necessary to limit the passage of abnormal loads through the tunnel.

“Any vehicles in excess of 2.9m (9ft 6in) in width will not be permitted.

“Thanks to the investment which created the second tunnel, we are in a position to carry out this work with minimal disruption to customers who rely on the A19.

“We thank drivers in advance for their patience and understanding.”
