Drivers using one of the busiest parts of the A1 in the North East have been warned of a series of overnight closures.
The closures on the A1 around Gateshead are to allow drainage and traffic management work to be carried out.
The southbound carriageway will be closed from Junction 69 (A184 Gateshead Quays) to J67 (Coal House) from Friday to Sunday, and between junction 73 (Derwenthaugh) and junction 69 (A184 Gateshead Quays) on Monday, August 24.
All closures will take place overnight between 8pm and 6am.
Overnight closures will also apply from Monday, August 24 until Thursday, August 27, and on Tuesday, September 1, between 8pm and 6am, on the northbound A1 between J67 (Coal House) and J71 (Metro Centre) for the traffic management to be moved to the northern section between J69 (A184 Gateshead Quays) and J71 (MetroCentre).
Highways England project manager Lynne Biddles said: “We’re advising people to allow extra time for their journeys when the closures are taking place, although we’ve deliberately timed the work to be carried out when traffic levels are at their lowest. They will also be removed during the bank holiday weekend.”
Clearly-signed diversions will be in place during the closure. There will be a separate diversion route for heavy goods vehicles to avoid a low bridge at Lobley Hill Road.
The closures will take place as work continues on the £61m A1 Coal House to MetroCentre improvement scheme.
Once the scheme is complete, almost four miles of the A1 will be widened to 3 lanes in both directions between Coal House junction and the MetroCentre junction.
Work is expected to be completed by spring 2016.
