Heavy traffic is reported after a section of a busy North East road was closed after a four-vehicle collision.

There is thought to be debris on both sides of the A19 just north of Testos roundabout, near Boldon Colliery.

The road was closed for a section between the roundabout and Monkton on the northbound side, which is a stretch which leads towards the Tyne Tunnel.

One lane has since reopened past the scene, but the incident remains ongoing.

The accident was reported at about 4.45pm and happened on the northbound side of the dual carriageway.

The Twitter account NE Traffic News posted: "A19 Northbound, delays and heavy traffic after a four vehicle collision north of the Testos roundabout with debris in both sides of the road."

Highways England later tweeted: "A19 northbound is closed between A184 Boldon and the A194 near Monkton due to multi vehicle incident."

They have since added: "A19 northbound now has 1 lane open past the scene between A184 Boldon and the A194 near Monkton. Incident remains ongoing."

Shortly after 5.30pm, Northumbria Police posted: "Collision on A19 N.bound at Testos R/about. N.bound lanes closed, diversions in place. Motorists advised to use alternative route."
