TRAIN passengers are facing disruption over the Bank Holiday after rail staff have voted for strike action.
Workers at Northern Rail have decided to strike over working conditions, pay and job security.
The RMT Union said the firm, which runs services across the North and through Hartlepool, is employing casual staff rather than its own employees to check tickets at stations.
RMT secretary Bob Crow said the train operator was undermining staff while “exploiting a short term work-force”.
He said that if there is work that needs to be done it should be carrid out by permanently employed staff.
Northern Rail hit back at the union saying it was effectively asking it to put people out of work.
The earliest date a strike could take place is on Monday and further talks are expected over the next few days before any final decision on a walkout is made.
