North East commuters were facing travel chaos on the railways this evening as signalling problems saw trains delayed and cancelled on the East Coast main line.

A signalling problem at Darlington is causing major disruption to journeys throughout the North East.

Virgin Trains said: “Trains cannot run between York and Newcastle via Darlington.

“Some trains are being diverted via Sunderland ,with journey times extended by up to 90 minutes.

“A very limited road replacement transport service is available between York and Newcastle.

Northern Rail services between Saltburn/Middlesbrough and Bishop Auckland are being replaced by buses between Middlesbrough and Bishop Auckland.

There is no firm estimate yet of how long disruption will last, but it is likely to continue until at least 8pm.

Passengers may travel with any train company through the affected area.

CrossCountry and First TransPennine Express passengers may use each other’s services between York and Leeds.

Virgin Trains are advising customers not to travel tonight on services passing Darlington. Tickets will be valid on services tomorrow.

It’s believed the problem to the signals was caused by vandalism.
