A WOMAN from Hartlepool was killed after a horror smash on the M1 near Sheffield.
The 52-year-old woman, who has not yet been named, sustained fatal head and chest injuries after the smash in the early hours of Easter Sunday.
Police investigating the incident say the woman’s silver Vauxhall Corsa car crossed the hard shoulder, slid down an embankment and collided with trees before overturning.
Family liaison officers from Cleveland Police have been working closely with their Sheffield counterparts and informed the woman’s husband of the tragedy on Easter Sunday.
Investigating officers from South Yorkshire Police have launched an investigation into what happened.
A police spokesman said: “The silver Vauxhall Corsa was travelling northbound, half a mile south of J31, when the driver appears to have lost control with the car leaving the carriageway to the nearside.
“The Corsa crossed the hard shoulder, sliding down a banking and colliding with trees before ending on its roof.”
The incident happened just after 5.40am on Easter Sunday, April 8.
A 40-year-old Scottish man, a passenger in the Corsa, sustained minor cuts and bruises that required treatment at the Northern General Hospital.
