COUNCIL chiefs say they are working to move travellers that set up camp on a town playing field.
Seventeen caravans moved on to the Hartlepool Borough Council-owned Central Park field at the bottom of West View Road, on the town’s Central Estate.
We are doing everything possible to ensure that they are moved on from there as quickly as possibleHartlepool council spokesman
They arrived on the site on Tuesday night leading to concerns among local residents and council chiefs looking into moving them.
One Central Estate resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “There are masses of them. There are caravans, kids and dogs.
“It is not right that they can just come along and plonk themselves on your doorstep.
“The field is used for local football on a weekend, but it looks like there won’t be any this weekend. The teams pay fees for that ground.”
The sports field is used for a range of activities including football and rugby matches.
A council spokesman said: “Seventeen traveller caravans/camper vans arrived early on Tuesday evening on the council owned playing field known as Central Park, off West View Road.
“We are doing everything possible to ensure that they are moved on from there as quickly as possible.”
There are no designated traveller sites in Hartlepool and no plans to include any in the new Local Plan.
