DOZENS of churchgoers helped raise vital funds by taking part in a sponsored walk.

Members of St Luke’s Church, in Tunstall Avenue, Hartlepool, held the sponsored walk on Saturday morning to help cover the cost of having a diseased sycamore tree removed from the grounds of the church earlier this year.

The five-and-a-half mile walk started from St Luke’s with a stop in Ward Jackson Park before returning to the church.

The sponsored tree-themed walk – which aimed to raise around £1,000 in sponsorship - was followed with a soup lunch at the parish centre.

There was also a shorter one-and-a-half-mile route that people could also go on.

The tree was removed in February at a cost of £1,140. The sponsored walk will help restore church funds which were used to pay for the work.

The sycamore tree has since been replaced with a midland hawthorn.
