HARTLEPOOL-born TV presenter Jeff Stelling has been dragged into a row over the town’s ceremonial mayor.
Sky Sports favourite Jeff, who started his career in journalism as a reporter with the Mail, was mentioned on Twitter as a potential candidate to be the town’s next mayor.
The current ceremonial mayor, Councillor Stephen Akers-Belcher, has found himself at the centre of a storm in recent days after he was sacked from his job as a care manager with Newcastle City Council for gross misconduct.
The episode has sparked outrage from fellow councillors who have called for him to stand down from his role until an appeal is brought to a conclusion.
As the row rumbles on, town man John Laws tweeted: “We’ve had a monkey, now let’s get @StellingJeff as mayor”.
Hampshire-based Jeff was quick to reply, saying: “He’s to appeal so let’s wait. Think U need to be in Hpool to be mayor. I am 300 miles too far away”.
Seaton councillor Paul Thompson then joined the debate, making reference to the mayor being away on holiday.
Coun Thompson tweeted: “Jeff, you are 5,000 miles closer than our current mayor who is currently sunning himself in Mexico”.
And the account of Hartlepool United mascot H’angus the Monkey cheekily tweeted: “I’m sure I could fill the boots. I’ve done it before il do it again!!! #freebananas”.
