MATTHEW Charlton is magic - or so his fellow college students now believe.
When the 17-year-old isn’t in the classroom or studying between lessons, he spends his time wowing other students in the corridors at Hartlepool College of Further Education with his outstanding array of illusions and tricks.
The talented teen is in the first year of a creative media course to become a web designer, but the former St Hild’s CE Student admits his ultimate dream is now to dazzle and amaze people with his collection of perplexing tricks as a professional magician.
“Web design is something I take very seriously but magic is my first love,” said Matthew, who lives in the Rift House area of Hartlepool with his mum, Louise.
It’s been that way since Matthew first tried his hand at a card trick when he was just seven years old.
And since that day he has been honing his skills and tricks, similar to those made popular by street magicians such as Derren Brown, Dynamo and Matthew’s own personal inspiration, David Blaine.
And now he can make cards disappear, pluck any named card from a pack of 52 and swap a card in somebody’s hand without touching them - or so he has his audience believing.
“I’d love to be a professional magician if I got the opportunity,” he added.
“My style of magic is executed extremely close to people, so I’d love to work at events as a table entertainer in restaurants or on a cruise ship.”
Matthew is leaving no stone unturned in making the most of his impressive sleight of hand and array of tricks.
He is a member of Youth Magic Circle and a magic group run by Stephen Mulhern, a professional magician who is best known as the presenter of spin-off TV show Britain’s Got More Talent.
On the subject of Britain’s Got Talent, Matthew is planning to apply for the TV talent show in an attempt to further raise his profile.
But as forthcoming as Matthew is about his love of magic, not even those closest to him are lucky enough to discover any of the tricks of the trade.
“It’s all about diverting people’s attention,” he said.
“Most people believe it’s very hard but it’s all quite simple.
“I’m not saying anymore than that though!”
