POLICE have launched a murder investigation after a man was found with serious injuries and later died in hospital.
Officers were called to a property in Hutton Avenue, Hartlepool, at around 10.20pm on Tuesday, December 31.
The 31-year-old man, named locally as former amateur boxer Mark Denton, was taken to hospital with serious injuries but was sadly pronounced dead.
A 17-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being questioned by police.
Residents said there had been a ‘commotion’ at the house and that a party had been taking place.
One elderly resident in the street, who did not want to be named, said: “It appears there has been some kind of party. It was quite noisy.
“The house was sold a few months ago at auction, but people have been coming and going still.
“It looked like a few people went there last night, then the next thing we know five police cars are outside”.
A post-mortem examination is being carried out today.
Police cordoned off the property and are carrying out house to house enquiries in the area.
The house has a ‘sold’ sign outside and it seemed there had been a party at the property.
Glasses had been left on the wall outside, an empty box of beer was sat on a garden path and the living room window of the house was shattered.
Another resident, who also did not want to be named, said: “We heard some banging and other noises, some kind of commotion. We thought nothing of it until we saw the police cars this morning.
“It’s a fairly quiet street, but there’s been problems like most places.”
Police are asking anyone who was in the area at the time and who may have information to contact the non-emergency number 101.
