AN MP was in town on a fact-finding trip as he learnt more about the issues affecting the metals recycling industry.

Tom Blenkinsop, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland visited European Metal Recycling, in Thomlinson Road, Hartlepool.

Mr Blenkinsop said: “EMR is very important to the Teesside local economy and I found it extremely valuable to get an insight into their business.

“Metals recycling is a British industry success story and one we should be proud of.

“Companies like EMR are helping to ensure waste metal doesn’t end up in landfill sites but is transformed into a useful resource which is good for our key environmental objectives of reducing waste and cutting carbon emissions.”

Mr Blenkinsop was welcomed by Ken Mackenzie, of the British Recycling Association, of which EMR is a member.

Mr Mackenzie said: “We are very pleased Mr Blenkinsop came to visit EMR, Hartlepool.

“It was a very productive visit which allowed us to discuss some of the key issues facing UK metal recyclers today.

“In particular it was useful to talk about the Government’s current waste policy review and its implications for the metals recycling industry.

“It is vital this review helps metal recyclers to maximise capacity and the environmental benefits of recycling.”
