KIND–HEARTED churchgoers helped raise £1,000 towards the cost of replacing a diseased tree by taking part in a sponsored walk.

Members of St Luke’s Church, in Tunstall Avenue, Hartlepool, held the sponsored walk to help cover the cost of having a diseased sycamore tree removed from the grounds of the church earlier this year.

The final amount of sponsorship has now been collected and an impressive total of £1095.50 was raised, almost £300 more than expected.

Church leaders have welcomed the amount and thanked everybody for taking part in the walk.

The five-and-a-half mile walk started from St Luke’s with a stop in Ward Jackson Park before returning to the church.

The sponsored tree-themed walk was followed with a soup lunch at the parish centre.

There was also a shorter one-and-a-half-mile route that people could also go on.

Pauline Shaw, a member of St Luke’s Church, said: “The walk was organised to pay for the removal of a diseased tree from our grounds which had cost us £1,100.

“The walk has exceeded all expectations and raised a fabulous £1095.50, over £300 more than anticipated.

“This leaves us with a shortfall of just £44.50 which is to be made up from church funds.

“A massive thank you goes to all those who took part, those who sponsored their hard earned money, those that assisted with the soup lunch and children’s crafts, those that assisted in the organisation of the event and of course our thanks to the countryside warden team whose advice and support was invaluable.”

The tree was removed in February at a cost of £1,140.

The sponsored walk helped restore church funds which were originally used to pay for the work.

The sycamore tree has since been replaced with a midland hawthorn.

The church also runs a Kids United club for children of school years aged two to six, held every Friday during term time from 6pm to 7pm at St Luke’s Parish Centre, in Tunstall Avenue.

Sessions cost £1 a week and include stories, games, crafts, food and songs.
