A SPONSORED walk has been organised to fund repairs and improvements to church bells.
Parishioners and bell ringers at St Aidan’s Church, in Stockton Road, have organised the fundraising walk to take place this weekend.
The walk will start at the Marina and head down to Seaton Carew before turning around and heading back.
All of the money raised will go towards improvements to the church bells, which have deteriorated over the years.
Andrew Frost, the secretary of Hartlepool Bellringers, said: “The bells were rarely rung for many years and their condition has deteriorated to an extent where it is necessary to undertake work to make them better able to ring in the future.
“Bell ringers in Hartlepool have increased in numbers over the last three years and their enthusiasm means that bells are rung regularly at St Aidan’s, Stranton and St Oswald’s churches.
“The bells are rung for services, weddings and funerals as well as for the enjoyment of the bell ringers and, hopefully, the people of Hartlepool.
“But the bells in St Aidan’s are difficult for people to ring and they need urgent work.”
Activities and donations within the church have already raised money for the improvements, but fundraisers say more is needed. Any surplus cash raised will be used to improve bells in other churches.
The walk will take place this Saturday, September 7. Anyone who wishes to make a donation should send a cheque to Andrew Frost, 35 Egerton Road, Hartlepool, TS26 0BW, and make the cheque payable to “St Aidan’s Church PCC”.
