POLICE are on alert over potentially-deadly taser guns disguised as mobile phones which are being smuggled into the country.
Cleveland Police confirmed officers have been briefed about the high-powered stun guns, which look like mobile phones.
Forces across the country have been warned about a flood of the devices, which are more powerful than a police taser and can disable victims with a million-volt charge.
A Cleveland Police spokesman said: “We are aware of these items though it would be difficult to confirm if any are in circulation in the Cleveland force area.
“They are potentially very dangerous and our officers have been briefed about them.
“Any member of the public who comes across such items or who knows where and by who they are being used should contact any police officer.”
Cleveland Police and Durham Police can be contacted on 101.
