RESIDENTS are being warned about a mobile phone scam which tricks people into buying top-up vouchers.
The scam has been reported by victims in the Billingham and Thornaby areas and officers have warned people to be on their guard.
A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “A female victim reported that she had received a text from an unknown number.
“When the female replied to the text to ask who it was from, the suspect picked a name at random in the hope that it will be the same as a friend or relative.
“If the victim responds as though the name is of a person who is known to them, the suspect then states that they have a new phone number and asks the victim to purchase a top-up voucher and enter the code for them. ”
