POLICE have warned motorists to only travel if absolutely necessary following a flood risk statement.
Officers say drivers should particularly avoid the A178 Tees Road in Hartlepool, between the B1277 Brenda Road junction and A1046 Port Clarence Road.
Other roads to be avoided include the A1046 Port Clarence Road, the A19 entry and exit slip roads at the Portrack Interchange and the bottom of Portrack Lane.
There have also been reports of heavy traffic on the A689 leaving Hartlepool.
High Tunstall School in Hartlepool is closed today due to storm damage, as well as Trimdon Village Junior School and St William’s RCVA Primary in Trimdon Village.
Power is still off in areas of Billingham and Hartlepool.
Residents evacuated from Port Clarence spent the night in Billingham Forum.
Inspector Mark Hall, of Cleveland Police, said: “Where journeys need to be undertaken, extra time and care should be taken, particularly now with the possibility of flooding on the roads and sub-zero road temperatures.
“Houses and businesses that are at particular risk of flooding have been contacted and given advise should they need to evacuate.”
