Firefighters were called to Fizzy Izzy’s Ice Cream Parlour, in Seaton Carew, after customers could smell burning in the shop.
Two engines, from Stranton and Billingham fire stations, were quickly at the popular seaside attraction after being called shortly after 3pm on Saturday.
One woman, who was inside Fizzy Izzy’s with her family when the incident happened but did not want to be named, said: “We were in there enjoying an ice cream when we started to smell burning.
“Staff calmly moved us into the adjoining arcades and from there we were evacuated, as was the arcade on the other side.
“The firemen had breathing apparatus on and it seemed to be a chip pan fire.
“Everyone was very calm and no-one was hurt, so it was handled well.”
Fizzy Izzy’s declined to comment.
