A Sunderland fan became an unlikely internet star after posting his drunken warblings about Sam Allardyce being appointed as the team’s new manager.

Stewart ‘Mackem’ West posted a song on his Facebook ‘banter’ page, Mackems V Geordies, on Friday night after news of Big Sam’s arrival broke.

The song quickly grabbed the attention of football fans and was shared far and wide across the internet.

Stewart, originally from Hendon, Sunderland, said: “It was just a bit of banter on my Facebook page, it wasn’t meant to actually be a new football song.

“Allardyce is the best signing we could have got, I’ve wanted him for ages.

“I’d had a few beers on Friday night and decided to post the video for a bit of banter and to wind up the Geordies. It’s not something I’d do sober.”

The dad-of-four, 39, who now lives in Crewe, added: “I was expecting the usual comments from Geordies calling me and telling me to shut up, but I wasn’t expecting it to go as big as it has. I cringed a little bit when I realised, but it’s just light-hearted banter.

“I never miss a Sunderland game. I travel back home to see them and I’ve never missed an away game in the last five years, but I won’t expect people to be singing this song the next time I’m at the Stadium of Light.

“I think Allardyce is the man for the job and he’s much better than the rest of the ones we’ve had.

“He’s got the experience and a cracking record. Newcastle fans will say he’s rubbish and that his football’s horrible, but look where they are now.”

Allardyce is the first ever manager to take charge of both Newcastle United and Sunderland.
