Jeff Stelling was given a huge boost on his epic walking challenge as his beloved Hartlepool United paid him a visit.

Jeff – arguably Pools’ most famous fan – is now seven days into his 10-day marathon walking challenge.

Jeff Stelling and Russ Green were visited by Hartlepool Uniteds players and staff on yesterdays leg.

The Soccer Saturday presenter set off from Hartlepool on Monday, and is expected to reach his final destination of Wembley Stadium on Wednesday after 10 gruelling days.

He has been joined every step of the way by Pools chief executive Russ Green, and yesterday, he had a real surprise in store for the former Countdown host.

The Pools squad and coaching staff stopped off on their way to tomorrow’s match at Leyton Orient to meet Jeff, give him their best and congratulate him on his efforts so far. He is completing the challenge in aid of Prostate Cancer UK, with the amount of donations having already smashed through his £200,000 target.

Today, he was joined on the Coventry to Leicester leg of the journey by H’Angus the Monkey, Pools’ famous mascot.

I knew absolutely nothing about it. It was a brilliant, brilliant surprise

However, the highlight of the day was provided by Craig Hignett and his team.

Jeff said: “It was a really testing day, to be honest, and everyone was pretty exhausted by the end of it.

“There was a really uplifting moment, though, when the Hartlepool United team coach came to meet us with Craig Hignett, the coaching staff and the players.

“I knew absolutely nothing about it. It was a brilliant, brilliant surprise.

“The lads were great and in good spirits. It certainly raised my spirits.

“It was quite a big thing for me. I can’t think of another football team that would go out of its way like that for a supporter, even if I’m the honorary president.”

Tomorrow, Jeff and fellow walkers will make their way from Northampton to Milton Keynes ahead of the final two days of the challenge.

Today, Leicester legend Alan Birchenall and former snooker star Willie Thorne also showed their support for Jeff.
