YOUNGSTERS made a splash at an annual swimming event.

Primary school children from 14 schools across Hartlepool all took part in the recent Annual Fun Gala, held at the town’s Mill House Leisure Centre.

The event caters for non-competitive swimmers and includes a range of events, with the main aim being children having fun.

The youngsters enjoyed a number of activities which help to improve their confidence in the water.

Children from St Bega’s Primary School, in the town’s Thorpe Street, were celebrating after they were crowned winners.

Clavering Primary School, in the town’s Clavering Road, were all smiles after their second place finish and St John Vianney Primary School, in King Oswy Drive, finished third.

Pupils and staff from Springwell School, in Wiltshire Way, were also recognised for their efforts and won The Sportsmanship Trophy.

The trophies were presented to the children by Councillor Hilary Thompson, Hartlepool Borough Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism and Nicola Bailey, director of child and adult services.

Councillor Thompson said: “The council has a proud record of working with schools to help children learn to swim.

“This event is one of many in our calendar and it was fantastic to see so many children enjoying themselves and confident in the water.

“Everyone who took part deserves a big pat on the back.

“It was a really good event and I’d like to thank all those involved including our swimming teachers, school staff, Mill House Leisure Centre and Hartlepool Sixth Form College.”
