Seven perennial wildflower meadows will be included in Hartlepool Borough Council's popular initiative.

The new meadows will cover about half a hectare, and have been sown in the Middle Warren area of Hartlepool.

The perennial sites are in addition to 37 locations of annual wildflower meadows which are currently being planted across the town.

The scheme was launched by the council in 2014 along the A689 leading in and out of the town.

It has been extended each summer since because of its popularity.

Coun Marjorie James, chair of Hartlepool Borough Council’s neighbourhood services committee, said: “The wildflower planting scheme has been so well received by local residents and people visiting the town that we have decided to extend the planting again this year.

“In 2016, the amazing displays of wildflowers proved to be one of the main talking points throughout the town and I’m sure it will be no different this summer.

“The council works very hard to make best use of its limited resources to make the town as attractive as possible and the establishment of perennial wildflower meadows will have further environmental benefits as they will play their part in helping to protect honey bees, butterflies and other insects.”

In 2017, annual wildflower meadows will be located in the following areas:
