CONSTRUCTION work has started on a new 62-bedroom hotel at Hartlepool Marina.
The new five-storey Travelodge hotel is being built at The Lanyard, in Hartlepool, on land next to the KFC restaurant and Vue cinema.
At least 12 jobs are expected to be created as a result of the multi-million pound scheme, which is being built on the car park to the east of KFC.
The hotel will include a reception area, bar and a separate ground floor restaurant.
Large steel girders have recently been erected on the site.
Work is currently ahead of schedule and it could be finished by the end of the year.
Developer Jomast submitted the planning application and is building the hotel, which will then be rented out to Travelodge.
The ground floor restaurant serving the hotel will be a separate franchise and will be marketed by Jomast.
A spokesman for Travelodge said: “The new hotel is expected to create between 10 and 12 jobs plus the proposed staffing for the ground-floor restaurant.
“The scheme is running ahead of schedule at the moment and it could be completed this year, but more likely the first quarter of 2013.”
Plans for the development at the site, which is known as Metropolitan Park, were unanimously backed by Hartlepool Borough Council’s planning committee in October last year.
Despite concerns about drainage on the whole of the marina, councillors from across the political spectrum, unanimously backed the plans at the meeting.
Members hoped it would prove to be a “catalyst” for other developments while it was also hoped it would boost tourism.
The development is part of the Jomast Trincomalee Wharf scheme, near the Museum of Hartlepool, which could include a mix of shops, accommodation, offices and restaurants.
The new hotel will have both family and double rooms and it will be around the corner from the Premier Inn hotel, off Maritime Avenue.
