A skipping festival was held at Brierton Sports Centre, in Brierton Lane, Hartlepool, involving children from the town’s Clavering, Eldon Grove, Fens, Lynnfield and St Joseph’s schools.
The event, held yesterday between 9.30am and 11.45am, saw 150 kids battle it out in the final with Lynnfield Primary School, in Grosvenor Street, scooping the overall champions prize.
There were a number of events for the pupils to compete in, including individual and group events, and even dancing with the skipping ropes.
Natalie Downes, competition and school games manager at Dyke House Sports and Technology College, said all of the children have grown in confidence as a result of the event, and used their imaginations to come up with different ideas for the dance events.
She said: “It was a year four skipping festival, a competition which doesn’t usually happen.
“It’s basically individual and group events using skipping ropes, and even incorporating dance.
“Each school was really good and although the standard was really high there had to be one winner, which was Lynnfield Primary School, who just beat the others to the title.
“There were a lot of children from the other schools who were disappointed but we’d like them to know that they really all did brilliantly.”
She added: “It was really good and everyone had a fantastic time.
“The event gave the age group a chance to do something and really increased their confidence. This is the second time we’ve held the event and judging by the reaction it’s something that everyone would like to definitely do again.”
The children from the five schools at the event had beat off stiff competition from other schools in the town to get to the final.
