I recall something in the Mail’s Memory Lane a few months ago asking if there was a link to anyone in Hartlepool and the Battle of Waterloo.
Well I can tell you that Peter Devine, who lived in Knowle Street, in Old Town, Hartlepool, fought at Waterloo and survived.
He fell on hard times, and the good people of the town had a whip-round for him – raised £13.
This was in 1870, and it stopped the old guy going into the workhouse.
The money was given to him monthly as a sort of pension. He died in 1871 and is buried in Hart Lane cemetery.
