LETTER: Not all gave their support to VE Day commemoration

The Mayor of Hartlepool Coun. Stephen Akers-Belcher (left ) and Coun. Allan Barclay with the beacon in Victory Square, Hartlepool.

I am writing on behalf of Hartlepool Armed Forces Ex-Service Associations regarding the 70th VE Day commemoration service on May 8.

I would like to thank the Mayor, Coun Stephen Akers-Belcher, and Coun Allan Barclay for attending in what can only be described as miserable weather.

I would also like to thank the standard bearers of the following associations: RASC/RCT, RAF, WRAC and two from the Royal Artillery.

Special thanks go to Tony Longstaff, the bugler, who had travelled across from Eston to play the General Salute, Last Post and Reveille.

We had men and women in their 90s in attendance.

It was plain to see that the local elections were over, highlighted by the absence and lack of support from other borough councillors.

Tug Wilson,

Royal Artillery Association.
