We should be global player

Have your say

Judging by his comments, I doubt very much that D Mennear (Mail, February 24) actually took the trouble to read my letter to which he refers (Mail, February 19).

I can assure anyone reading Mr Mennear’s letter that, in my letter, I advocated we (the UK) leave the EU because we should be a global player and making our own trade deals, rather than remain tied to the moribund “customs union” that is the EU.

Hardly proposing “building a wall” is it, Mr Mennear?

Of course, I also stressed the political, democratic, and constitutional reasons for leaving the EU, but that can be a discussion for another time.

The most intriguing part of Mr Mennear’s letter was his final paragraph.

He declares that the matter of the EU referendum be decided by the people of Hartlepool.

Well, my letter closed by saying: “This issue (the EU referendum) is for the British people alone to decide.”

I mention this because the last time I checked Hartlepool was still part of Britain, and the referendum question is to be “should Britain remain in or leave the EU?”

In closing, with your permission Mr Mennear, I will continue to express my views in the Mail and elsewhere on this, and any other topic I choose.

I therefore respectfully decline your invitation to “give my pen a rest.”
