SUNDERLAND target Diego Forlan has signalled his intention to stay at Athletico Madrid for next season at least.
The 29-year-old striker is a player that Roy Keane has tried to bring to the Stadium of Light now twice, without success.

The Sunderland manager tried to sign him in his first season at the club as the Black Cats tried for promotion from the Championship.

And Keane went in for him again earlier this year, hoping the club's Premier League status would be an inducement.

But the Uruguayan international has his sights set on a higher level than simply top-flight membership and has turned his back for the moment on the riches of England's Premier League.

A source close to Forlan said: "There have been calls into the club from England but Diego isn't interested.

"He wants to stay and play in the Champions League."

Forlan is a former team-mate of Keane's at Manchester United and although his scoring record at Old Trafford was not prolific, he has gone on to great success since moving to Spain in 2004 and joining Villareal.
