The eight-times capped midfielder had a shocker against Bolton Wanderers earlier this month and is believed to be one of those players his manager's wrath was aimed at in the post-match Press conference at the Reebok.

Richardson's month went from bad to worse when he was late for training last week and failed to even appear on the team-sheet against Arsenal.

And he cut a crestfallen figure at Sunderland's post-match salute of the fans at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, walking around the pitch with his hands in his pockets and not seeming to enjoy the experience much.
But he is hoping to avoid Keane's close-season clear-out and prove himself in Sunderland's colours next season.

He said: "During the week I was late for training due to my train being late. That's pretty much the reason why I was left out. I expect that of the manager.

"If you're not in on time, you don't get in the squad. The train was late. It's the first time I've been late.

"I understand the decision. I was there on Sunday supporting the lads, who played well against Arsenal and were unlucky.

"I spoke to the gaffer about it and I sorted it out. It's fine. There's no hard feelings. I'm just raring to go for next season.

"I'm a Sunderland player until I'm told differently and I'll be back for pre-season.

"I wouldn't have come to Sunderland if I thought I was just going to leave after a year. Sunderland's a massive club and I want to be here next season.

"It's been ups and downs for me really, this season. The start killed me a bit – getting injured – but hopefully next season I'll have a good pre-season, injury-free, kick on from there and get Sunderland further up the table.

"People have seen flashes of what I can do. The main thing is to get more consistency, keep fit and fulfil your potential.

"It's a massive club and I've enjoyed my first season even though I've had injuries. But the fans have been great, the management and everyone here have been very supportive of me and hopefully next season I can have a better start."
