The Republic of Ireland international has had an operation and now faces an intensive summer rehabilitation programme.

The centre-half hurt himself badly while on holiday and was immediately sent back to Sunderland for treatment, and he was quickly sent for an operation.

The defender, who was recently included in Giovanni Trapattoni's first Republic of Ireland squad, was treated by club doctor and head of medical services, Glenn Rae.

Dr Rae said: "It was a very complex fracture but we managed to get Paul back with us straight away so he could get the best possible attention.

"The operation was a success and Paul will now undergo intensive rehabilitation during the course of the pre-season. We're hopeful he'll be able to return to action by the start of the new season."

The 22-year-old impressed during a string of friendly internationals for the Republic at the end of the season. But now he faces a fresh battle to recover from a very serious injury.

McShane started more than half of Sunderland's games last season but struggled to make an impact after the halfway mark when fellow centre-half Jonny Evans arrived in the January transfer window.

He was hoping his performances in the end-of-season friendly internationals for the Republic would act as a reminder to Sunderland of his abilities.

But now he faces a battle to be fit after surgery on a fluke injury which could well prove as much of an obstacle for a first team place as any new signing.
