MANCHESTER United have made the first attempts to prise Michael Owen away from Newcastle, according to reports.
The News of the World reports that the Old Trafford club have made informal contact with Newcastle chiefs with a view to a cut-price £7m move.

Owen's future is uncertain amid talk that he will be asked to lower his wage demands as Newcastle try to secure the services of the England striker with a new deal.

His current contract expires in 2009.
