JUBILANT Jemma Lowe was today celebrating a sensational double.
The 18-year-old swimmer completed her final competition before flying out to the Olympic Games by striking gold for the second time at the weekend.

Lowe won the 100 and 200 metre butterfly titles at the asa Championships in Liverpool – domestic swimming's version of the FA Cup.

Jemma became the100 metre championship on Friday before clinching part two of the double with success at the longer distance yesterday at the Picton Pool on Merseyside.

The Hartlepool teenager was simply unbeatable at the British Olympic team's farewell competition.

Lowe beat Edinburgh's Alena Popchanka by more than half a second in the 100 metres as she clocked a winning time of 59.33 seconds.

And yesterday's win was even more convincing as she won by more than a second to lead a famous 1-2-3 for North East England.

Jemma stormed home in a time of two minutes 7.57seconds, with her Borough of Stockton team-mate Jessica Dickons taking silver in two minutes 8.74 seconds.

Derwentside's Stephanie Johnson finished third, though she was a whopping six seconds behind the gold medallist.

Jemma's double at the asa championship continued what has been a magnificent 2008 for the English Martyrs Sixth Form College student.

Lowe came first in the 200 metre butterfly at the British Championships in Sheffield in April, which doubled as the Olympic trials, and won silver in the 100.

She then followed that up by winning the bronze medal in the 100 metre butterfly at the World Short Course Championships in Manchester.

Then in May, the former Commonwealth Games swimmer was named as the Hartlepool Sports Personality of the Year.

Lowe is due to fly out to the British training camp in Osaka, Japan on Friday July 25, ahead of the Beijing games which start on Saturday, August 9.

Jemma was not the only success story for North East England at the asa Championships.

South Shields swimmer Chris Cook, who represents City of Newcastle, won the 100 metre breaststroke title yesterday by almost half a second.

British record holder Joanne Jackson (Derwentside) won the 200 metre freestyle gold while Aimee Willmott (Middlesbrough) took bronze in the 200 metre individual medley.

Andrew Mayor (City of Newcastle) was third in the 200 metre butterfly.
