HARTLEPOOL athlete Kayleigh Mills heads off for her first England appearance with praise ringing in her ears.
The 16-year-old will be throwing the hammer for her country at the British Schools Championships in Bedford.

Kayleigh will go there full of confidence after winning the Under 17 gold at the Sainsbury's English Schools Track and Field Championships
in Gateshead.

The Manor College of Technology student has been tipped for success by PE teacher Martyn Gordon, who was a top middle distance runner.

"The British Internationals are going to be the first of many for Kayleigh," he said.

"She has the dedication, talent, drive and ambition to do well.

"Kayleigh has all of the ingredients for success.

"She will definitely go on to represent Great Britain many more times."

Kayleigh was one of four Manor College of Technology pupils from the school to be involved in the tournament at Gateshead last week but unfortunately not all were as successful.

Ashleigh Wood, ranked number one in her event, the 100m hurdles, was the victim of an upset as she failed to reach the finals much to her disappointment.

She has an opportunity to set the record straight at the up and coming English Combined Schools Events and triathlon and Martyn has great faith in her to overcome the previous disappointment.

He said: "Even though she failed to reach the finals, she is still one of the best multi-eventers in the country."

Gregg Jackson unfortunately sustained a hamstring injury and the Middlesbrough youth footballer could not take part in the tournament.
Newcomer to athletics, Jessica Metcalfe, who has been inspired by
Kayleigh's progress, took part in the hammer throw and impressed.

Martyn added: "Just to have four pupils from the school at the National Championships is really great."
