JEMMA Lowe could be the surprise package at the Olympics.
Those were the thoughts today of Lowe's dad Mike who thinks the lack of expectation hanging over the Hartlepool swimmer could allow her to relax and enjoy competing in her maiden games.

Lowe will race in the 100 metres and 200m butterfly where she
is ranked fifth and third in the world respectively in times since January.

But the 18-year-old is not being touted as one of the favourites for a medal in Beijing after Lowe only really emerged on the international scene in the past 12 months.

Mike reckons the lack of pressure hanging over his daughter could play into her hands and she can edge past the likes of 100m world record holder Jessicah Schipper to claim a medal.

"The good thing is the expectation level is not particularly high because Jemma has always been in the background to some degree," he said.

"She has progressed so far in the last year or so and she is at the stage now where people want to know more.

"If they talk about Olympic hopefuls Jemma's name doesn't really come on the radar which is good because we don't want to be among those."
