Lowe considers American move

JEMMA Lowe may be forced to leave these shores if she is to be transformed from Olympic finalist into medalist.
That was the revelation from the Hartlepool swimmer's father Mike as the 18-year-old considers her next steps in the sport.

Lowe is back in town after returning from her maiden games where she finished sixth in the 200 metres butterfly, fourth in the 4x200m medley relay and reached the semi-finals of the 100m butterfly.

The Borough of Stockton swimmer already has her eyes on going a step better at London 2012, but realises she needs to bridge the gap between one of the world's top 10 swimmers to one of the top three.

Mike revealed Lowe is considering doing her university education near the British training centre, in Swansea, or even moving to America to improve her performance.

"I am not naive enough to think getting to 2012 will be any easier than it was to get to Beijing," he said.

"It might be a case that she needs to go somewhere else.

"The backstroker in the relay team is over in the US and a lot of the swimmers go to different countries either to university or to train.

"She can also go down to Swansea which is one of the performance centres."

One of the areas that Jemma will look to work on is matching the physiques of her rivals.

"We have to look at ways we can improve for the next competitions," said Mike.

"If you look at the physiques of some of the British team, it is like David and Goliath compared to the rest of the world.

"We think possibly Jemma needs to do more upper body strength and more gym work but you need to strike a balance because if you do too much gym work you are opening yourself up to injuries."

There is also the possibility that Lowe may decide to ditch one of her two individual events.

Lowe is seen as a better bet for the 200m (something she questions) but she failed to reach the final in her supposed strongest event.

In the semi-finals, she was made to pay for a lightning fast opening 100m and it took its toll over the final 50m.

It was not the first time Lowe had adopted a similar tactic and Mike said it was definitely something which she needed to grasp.

He said: "Work needs to be done on the back end of her 200m swim and I would think there is enough technology out there to say this is where you are going wrong.

"There is also a question mark over whether she can balance the two events.

"I think eventually she will have to concentrate on one of the two events but at this stage it is a difficult call to drop one event or the other."
