No time to celebrate for golden girl
AMANDA Coulson will have no time to celebrate her return to winning ways after admitting: I'll be back in the gym tomorrow.
The Catholic Club star halted Denmark's Gry Espensen at Seaton Carew last night but is already focusing on her next two tournaments.
Coulson will be looking to strike gold at the Amherst Comet Cup in Turkey for the second year running and then she's on domestic duty at the ABA Championship.
"I'm having today off and then I'll allow myself a little celebration tonight, a meal at Chimneys," she said.
"But I'll be back in the gym tomorrow to get ready for my next tournament.
"There are six weeks to go until Turkey and if training keeps going as well as it has been I'll be in mint condition."
Coulson looked pretty good last night as she inflicted the first stoppage defeat on Espensen.
The Mayfair Centre was packed to the rafters – as always – and the fans loved the finish.
"I enjoyed it," said the 25-year-old. "I'd not had a bout since December, but I thought I boxed well and now I can look forward to going out to Turkey."
It took Coulson time to warm up, though that was no real surprise.
Not only was it her first contest since defeat in the EU Championship final in France almost five months ago, the England international had been preparing for a different opponent – old foe Yvonne Baek Rasmussen.
"For six weeks, I'd been preparing for Yvonne, who's a southpaw," said Coulson.
"All my sparring had been geared for her."
Given the disruption, it was perhaps no surprise there were no fireworks in the opening round from the fans favourite.
Espensen looked composed in the first round and a couple of accurate left hooks to her opponent's head were a reminder to Coulson, if she needed one, that the Dane was not here to visit John Darwin's home town.
It was a measured approach from Coulson in the first and in the middle round she got her jab working sharply to start to get the better of Espensen.
The 21-year-old Jyllinge boxer came out aggressively for the third round, but it only served to spark Coulson into life.
Amanda caught Espensen as she moved forward and when she reeled off a right-left-left combination, the Dane was jolted.
Referee Mark Hodgson gave Espensen a standing eight count and when Coulson hammered home a left-right combo, the official implemented a second count and halted the bout.
When the stoppage came, Coulson led on all three judges scorecards – 22-13, 18-14, 24-11.
