SIMON Robinson has boosted his chances of joining Hartlepool neighbour Graeme Storm among the golfing elite.
The Seaton Carew golf star finished 13th at the Trophée du Golf Club de Genève yesterday in Switzerland, where his 4,150 euro cheque lifted him to 32nd in the European Challenge Tour rankings.

Given just the top 20 at the end of the season qualify for the main PGA European Tour in 2009, Robinson still has a bit of work to do.

However, with less than 12,000 euro separating Robinson with the players in the 18th, 19th and 20th positions, all is still to play for with nine tournaments still remaining.

The 26-year-old will be looking for more good finishes in his next three events in the Czech Republic, Denmark and Sweden.

Robinson had reached the halfway point in Geneva on 141 (three under par) and was under par again in rounds three and four over the weekend.

Saturday was a particularly good day for the former European and World Boys champion.

He dropped no shots and birdies at holes five, nine and 11 saw him register a three-under-par 69 to be six under par overall.

After starting day four in 10th spot, Robinson would have liked to have kicked on yesterday.

He made the perfect start with a birdie three at the first, but he double-bogeyed the par four ninth, a hole he had birdied on Saturday.

Robinson needed some birdies and he duly got them at 13, 14 and 15, and while he bogeyed the 18th, he will have been encouraged by a 71 for a tournament total of 281 (seven under par).

He ended seven strokes behind a three-way battle for the top between Brazil's Alexandre Rocha, Wil Besseling of Holland and Klas Eriksson, the Swede taking the title in a play-off.

Storm meanwhile collected another top 20 finish at the SAS Masters in
Sweden yesterday.

It could have been better considering he was ninth at the mid-way point, only four strokes behind leaders Nick Dougherty and Peter Hanson.
Swedish star Hanson duly took the title with a nine-under-par 271, one stroke ahead of Dougherty.

Storm finished seven shots behind the winner after completing the tournament on 278 (two under par).

The 30-year-old recorded back to back 71s over the weekend.

After being the model of consistency on Thursday and Friday – his opening two rounds featured only one dropped shot – the final two days were littered with bogeys.

A birdie three at the sixth on Saturday was followed by bogeys at nine, 11, 12 and 14 though thankfully he recovered with birdies at 17 and 18.

Bogeys at two, three and seven yesterday was not the start he was looking for, but he did sink his birdie putt at the par three fifth.

Cold and windy conditions in Stockholm made low scoring difficult but Storm played much better on the inward nine, where he birdied the par four 13th.
