HARTLEPOOL golfer Graeme Storm has been paired with a former champion at the Open golf championship.
Storm will play alongside double Major winner Sandy Lyle at Royal Birkdale on Thursday and Friday.

The group, which also includes Australia's Scott Strange, is the fifth group out on Thursday, with their rounds starting at 7.14am.

Their second round will be at 12.25pm on Friday.

Lyle, 50, won the Open Championship in Sandwich, Kent, in 1985 to become the first Briton to lift the famous claret jug since Tony Jacklin in 1969.

The Scot then went on to become the first Britih winner of the Masters when he triumphed at Augusta in 1988.

Lyle was 19th when the Open was last staged at Royal Birkdale in 1998, when American Mark O'Meara beat compatriot Brian Watts in a play-off.

The distinction of hitting the first shot in the 137th Open Championship - at 6.30am - falls to Australian Craig Parry.
