Storm threatens to ruin Norman fairytale

GRAEME Storm moved into real contention for the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale with a level par 70 yesterday.
If the 30-year-old Hartlepool golfer can repeat that or go lower today then he could turn out to be the surprise package to spoil Greg Norman's Open swansong.

"It's amazing that Greg is leading the tournament," said Storm. "It's fantastic. You hav
e to respect what he's done in the game and what he has done this week is unbelievable.

"If he continues to do what he is doing we could have a fairytale story on our hands, but I'm pretty happy with my own position."

Storm went through the turn in two over par, but birdied 10 and 11 and parred the next seven holes to add a 70 to his first round 76

"I played pretty much the same as yesterday but the conditions were that much better and I capitalised on that," said the former French Open Champion.

"I played both 10 and 11 perfect and got lucky on 15 to be honest. I hit my second shot way right and ended up on the path. I'd hit a provisional and actually lost that, but my first ball was on the path in between bushes on the left and right and I managed to make par and then I also got up and down it on 16 for par, but unfortunately didn't pick up one on 17."

Storm was unlucky to bogey the third where he had a poor lie after going through the green. He decided to putt rather than chip it because of the lie and it didn't quite come off.

Driving into a fairway bunker at eight meant he just had to take his medicine but he nearly saved par, his putt from 10 feet failing to drop.

A seven iron to 15 feet at the 10th for birdie was followed by a four iron to 12 feet at 11 for another birdie to get back the level par for the round and he parred the rest of the back nine.
