MR Entertainer Peter Cope is ready to wow his fans again – but his coach has warned the derby with David Lake will be no formality.
Cope has not boxed since winning the International Masters super-bantamweight belt at the Stadium of Light last July.
That 10-round battle with Gavin Reid thrilled the crowd at the Summer Rumble and trainer – and dad – Peter Snr says his son’s return at Houghton-le-Spring is long overdue.
“It will be nice for Peter to get back in there,” said the coach ahead of the big show which is headlined by the British title shoot-out between Jon Lewis Dickinson and David Dolan.
“We only had two fights last year, but it was still a year of progress because he did 10 rounds and won a title.
“But he’s been desperate to get back in the ring.
“He should have fought in September but was out through illness.
“So it has been seven months and I’m sure his supporters are looking forward to it as much as he is looking to give a good performance for them.
“Davey is going to test Peter and that’s what we want.
“Everything has gone well in training – he has sparred Callum Winton and Mick Hadfield who are two talented lads.
“But it’s all about now doing it in the ring for real on Friday.
“And Davey is not going to be making it easy, he’s coming to win.”
Cope has constructed an impressive start to his pro career thanks to six straight wins.
The Gus Robinson Developments featherweight will begin as the favourite, but Lake, who boasts a 50 per record of three wins from his six appearances, is no mug.
“Yes, I would say that Peter should win,” said Cope Snr. “But it only takes one thing to cause an upset – a cut, a dirty big right hand over the top or a slow start or whatever.
“This is pro boxing and the fight still has to be won and Davey is a tough lad who will be giving it absolutely everything.”
Cope is joined on the bill by his former Gus Robinson team-mate Paul Archer, the unbeaten light-welter from Easington, plus Fishburn’s Gary Fox, who was crowned Northern Area champ last September.
